Where can I get my car repaired?
You have the right to choose the shop where your car is repaired.  Though your insurance company may suggest a shop if you don't already have one, the choice is yours. That's the law.

Do I need to get more than one estimate?
No. If you feel comfortable with your choice of repair facility you are not required to obtain more than one estimate.  These guidelines are also spelled out in state consumer protection laws.

How do I choose a shop?
First, verify that the shop you have chosen is licensed within your state.  Then, ask the following questions:

Do they conform to state and local ordinances, including EPA regulations that protect the environment?

Is the shop clean and up to date? (You can always ask for a tour of the facility.)

Is the shop reputable and of good standing in your community? Ask friends and/or family for recommendations, and if they've been pleased with the shop they chose and the quality of the work.  Ask if the shop was professional in the handling the repair throughout the whole process.

Are there certificates displayed to prove technician training and ability?  A good shop will have ongoing training for all of its employees involved in the repair process.  Good certifications to look for are I-CAR Gold Class, ASE Certification, and Certified Welders.

Does the shop provide secure storage of your vehicle during the repair process?

Does the shop offer a lifetime guarantee on all of its workmanship?

You should be able to answer "YES" to all of these questions to determine a quality shop!

Once I've chosen a shop, now what should I do?

Once you've chosen a quality repair facility for your vehicle, you should get a written estimate of repairs.  This can be done by a shop appraiser or, if you are going through an insurance company, they may want to write up the damages.

Once you have an estimate from either the shop or the insurance company, you should be ready to schedule your repairs!

At Smitty's Auto Body we are happy to work with your insurance company and will do everything we can to make sure your job is expedited as quickly as possible.  If there are discrepancies between an insurance estimate and the actual cost of the job, we can bill the company directly to cover the additional cost.  If you are going "out of pocket" we will do our very best to do the job for the original estimate we wrote.
